Up to five $100,000 research grants will be awarded on a highly competitive basis. $100,000 research grant proposals will be judged according to the likelihood that the research undertaken will yield new discoveries about the ways science, in light of philosophical and theological reflection, points towards the nature, character and meaning of ultimate reality. Grant proposals should stipulate how the results of this research will be formulated and disseminated.
Application Process
Applications for the $100,000 research grants must include:
1. A 2000-4000 word statement describing the anticipated research to be pursued if the $100,000 research grant proposal created by the team is funded, including the following topics:
The research question or topic to be pursued
The significance of the research topic
The methodology to be used in the research, specifically how this methodology
represents the interdisciplinary nature of the STARS program and includes a
combination of methods drawn from the sciences and the humanities as
represented by the members of the Research Team
How the progress of the research will be measured
Projected outcomes, including scholarly publications, new graduate-level courses, media communications, etc.
The calendar for undertaking and completing the research
Where the research will be undertaken
How the members will participate in the research (meeting together at one location, sabbatical leave, telecommuting, etc.)
A budget and brief budget narrative
2. A curriculum vitae for each team member
3. Two sample publications from each team member
4. A completed application form from each team member
Applications are due November 1, 2007.
Desired Outcomes
The desired outcomes for the Research Grants include both lectures and articles as follows:
Lectures:
1 lecture planned / scheduled at a professional meeting of a scientific research society (e.g. The American Physical Society, Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society)
—and—
1 lecture planned / scheduled at a professional society of religious scholars / theologians
(e.g. The American Academy of Religion) and/or professional society of philosophers (e.g., The American Philosophical Association) and/or professional society of science and religion scholars (e.g., European Society for the Study of Science and Theology)
Articles:
1 jointly-authored article submitted to a refereed science research journal
(e.g. Nature, Science, Physics Today, General Relativity and Gravitation, Physical Review Letters)
—and—
1 jointly-authored article submitted to a refereed religious studies / theology research journal (e.g. Religious Studies, Theology Today) and/or 1 jointly-authored article submitted to a refereed philosophy journal (e.g., Proceedings and Addresses of the American Philosophical Association) and/or 1 jointly-authored article submitted to a refereed religion and science journal (e.g. Zygon, Theology and Science).\
Note: Grants from STARS do not include overhead for institutions and/or other organizations with which the applicant is associated unless negotiated with the STARS Program Director in writing in advance, i.e., during the application process.
